We Heart Knut

Ap07032306481 We spend a lot of time here at Current Events thinking about the news - what's hot, what's most important, what you need to know about . . . but there are some stories that just capture our hearts. And when I say capture our hearts, I mean some stories just make us all mushy.

Last winter, we stumbled on the story of an adorable polar bear cub in Germany. The tiny cub was rescued after his mother abandoned him and he's being raised in captivity at the Berlin Zoo. The photo to the right shows little Knut back in March. Wasn't he just adorable?

But not everyone agreed that the zoo should raise Knut. Some protested saying that it was unnatural and the zoo should let nature take its course with the little cub (meaning, let him die like he would in the wild after being abandoned). Fortunately, the Zoo never even considered that to be an option. Zookeepers tended to Knut as they would a baby, bottle feeding him, spending the night nearby when he was ill, etc.

Ap070731012657_2Knut is now getting a little bigger and more grown-up. He is, after all, about nine months old! Before we know it, Knut will turn one in December. Wonder if the zoo will have a first birthday party for our favorite cub?

That's a picture of him from July 31 at left.  Regardless of his maturity and size, he's still a favorite of ours. We just love the snow white fur and big brown eyes. In fact, Managing Editor Clara even has photos of Knut posted on her door. Seeing that fuzzy face can really help lighten up our day when it gets stressful around here.

What story in the news has captured your heart?

Is he eating a fish? Looks pretty yum.

I haven't really seen any cute news stories lately. It's mostly, well, war. But it's always nice to see the natural world every once in awhile, too. ;)

Hey. I think that Knut is really cute. :] I want to come see him sometime at the zoo.

Knut is so cute! I'm happy to see that people actually care about things more than war and what other countries are doing. It's so awesome that they took care of the bear, kind of like how its own mother would.

Hayley

Awww so cute! He is adorable!

The polar cub named Knut is quite adorable. I wonder why his mother would abandon him. I think his mother might be upset that her cute little baby is missing. However, thanks to God that he has a nice home to take care of him and has loved ones to love him. I think if we have the ability to take care of him, then why not just do it? It is good for the Berlin Zoo to take care of him. It is not only good for them but also good for him. Because when he was in the zoo, then we could watch him and have a merry time with him; besides, if he is go back to where he had found, he might die quickly. It is not good for him. Although he is just an animal, he still has the right to live. So, why not just let him live and grow up in the zoo?
